About this Episode

Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel warned the EU often “barks loudly” on issues like Israel but lacks the unity and legal tools to act decisively. With EU sanctions blocked, Bettel is exploring limited national measures but stressed legal constraints and preferred EU-level action. He urged caution on rapid enlargement, saying candidate countries must meet Copenhagen criteria before joining. On the Iran conflict, Bettel warned military pressure may strengthen Tehran and urged protecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. He also voiced concern over rising far-right support across Europe, calling for listening to voters’ fears, speeding up certain court procedures to restore public confidence, and defending against impunity that undermines democracy.

Small vegetable farms have struggled this summer as prolonged heatwaves and drought drove temperatures into the mid-30s, forcing plants into “survival mode” and stunting growth. Higher temperatures also encouraged pest outbreaks that devastated heat-sensitive crops such as cabbage, tomatoes and cauliflower, particularly on organic, low-chemical operations that lack chemical controls. Many growers relied on drip irrigation and water-saving measures, which mitigated but did not eliminate losses. Farms operating community-supported agriculture schemes reported members contributing extra and receiving priority shares, but attracting new members is becoming harder. Producers say competition from cheaper imports and increasingly frequent climate extremes threaten the viability of small local agriculture.

Universal Investment’s restructuring in Luxembourg could put up to 117 full‑time positions at risk, according to the OGBL union. Management says about 100 full‑time equivalents (FTE) will be affected. The workforce delegation reports 90 FTE facing a collective redundancy plan and 27 FTE at Universal Investment Luxembourg S.A. subject to individual layoffs. Unions seek social plans for both entities and plan to push for formal procedures. Negotiations may start mid‑September. The cuts coincide with the group shifting roles to Poland, worrying staff despite recent strong financial results and growth. The Finance Ministry says it was only informed on the announcement day and urges constructive social dialogue.
