For decades, the African Sahel was synonymous with drought, famine and desertification. But today, one of the world’s driest regions is experiencing a remarkable turnaround that is bringing new hope to millions of people.
Scientists have found that groundwater levels are rising across large parts of the Sahel, the vast semi-arid region stretching from Senegal to Ethiopia. Wells that had run dry are filling again, rivers are flowing more regularly, and even Lake Chad, which famously shrank during the devastating droughts of the 1970s and 1980s, is recovering. In some areas, groundwater levels have risen by more than four metres, creating new opportunities for farming and restoring ecosystems.
Researchers say several factors are contributing to the revival. A strengthening West African monsoon is bringing more rainfall, particularly in the form of intense storms that recharge underground aquifers. At the same time, communities across the Sahel have revived traditional water-harvesting techniques, such as zai pits, stone contour lines and small earth embankments that slow runoff and allow rainwater to soak into the ground. Large-scale restoration efforts like the Great Green Wall are also helping landscapes retain more moisture.
The effects are already being felt. Farmers are expanding irrigation, crop yields are improving, and wildlife is returning to habitats that had been dry for decades. In Chad, species such as the scimitar-horned oryx have been successfully reintroduced, while farmers in Niger have encouraged the natural regeneration of around 200 million trees on agricultural land.
Scientists caution that the region still faces serious challenges. Heavier rainfall also means more flooding, and climate change will continue to make weather patterns unpredictable. Even so, the overall trend offers a powerful reminder that damaged ecosystems can recover—and that local communities, working with nature rather than against it, can play a vital role in that recovery.
In a part of the world once defined by water scarcity, the return of groundwater is restoring not only landscapes, but hope for the future.
