Violent theft rose sharply last year, numbers of the police’s annual report show. Police report an increase of more than 30 percent. Robberies and assaults also climbed. And cases of domestic violence continued to grow. At the same time, vandalism declined.

Prime minister Luc Frieden faces a budget dilemma at an EU summit this week. Frieden opposes cuts to youth and research spending. He also rejects new EU taxes on tobacco and large companies.

A vote on emergency service reforms has been delayed. The national Fire and Rescue Corps, CGDIS, postponed the decision over legal concerns. The dispute centres on whether more doctors can join ambulance teams.
