A United States submarine sank an Iranian frigate near Sri Lanka, according to United States Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He said torpedoes hit the vessel in international waters. Sri Lankan authorities reported at least 87 people dead, with dozens still missing. NATO air defences intercepted an Iranian missile heading toward Turkey. Iran also launched missiles at Israel this morning, triggering air raid sirens and sending millions into shelters. In Washington, the United States Senate rejected a proposal to halt the American air campaign.

Spain has refused to allow United States strikes on Iran to launch from military bases on its territory.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez rejected a request from United States President Donald Trump to use bases in Rota and Morón for operations linked to the conflict with Iran. Madrid said any military action must respect international law. Trump reportedly threatened trade measures in response. Sánchez’s decision has drawn support from parts of his political base. Others warn the move could bring diplomatic tension and economic consequences.

Eurostat reported that unemployment in the euro area fell to 6.1 percent in January. The decline reflects continued resilience in the labour market across the European Union. Germany and the Netherlands recorded the lowest unemployment rates among large economies. Spain and France remained higher. Youth unemployment also fell slightly.
