About this Episode
Unemployment rate rose to 6.5% in August as jobseekers registered with Adem climbed to over 20 000, an 11.5% increase year‑on‑year. Employers reported close to 2800 vacancies — up 5% — but the most highly qualified jobseekers grew fastest (up 19%) and now make up one-third of registrations. The sharpest rises were among 30–44 year‑olds and 16–29 year‑olds. . Social work recorded the largest unemployment increase. Most in-demand roles are secretarial/administrative support, IT, and accounting/management.
The Association of Doctors and Dentists (AMMD) has denied Health Minister Martine Deprez’s and LSAP MP Mars Di Bartolomeo’s claims that it agrees with the new convention text, calling such statements “disinformation.” In a press release, the AMMD said it will not sign the convention without modernising the legislative framework and reiterated its stance since the previous convention was terminated. The association also disputed Deprez’s assertion that convention-based medical care can continue without a signed agreement, and said neither the minister nor the National Health Fund (CNS) has seriously sought a real accord. The AMMD added it cannot be replaced as a contracting partner and enjoys majority support among physicians.
Student association ACEL urged the government to build new student housing over the next four years and improve public transport to ease affordable student accommodation shortage. A survey found over half of students faced problems securing university housing, citing waits up to six months, rejections, and poor communication. ACEL said housing and mobility must be planned together — affordable options near campus reduce commutes, while better transit expands viable housing further away. The group also called for transparent, fair allocation rules and clear explanations for any housing rejections.
