Between 2,000 and 3,000 people reportedly entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco by land and sea. Nine bodies were recovered as border controls collapsed, prompting Madrid to send 200 additional police officers and 60 troops. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he would visit Ceuta, while Italy’s foreign minister called for Spain to be suspended from the Schengen area. Ceuta and Melilla form the European Union’s only land borders with Africa.
A Russian ballistic missile destroyed a drone factory in Kyiv owned by US-registered company Terminal Autonomy. The facility produced AI-guided loitering and precision-strike drones designed to resist Russian signal jamming. No fatalities were reported, and the attack appears to be the first Russian strike on a facility owned by a US company during the war.
The European Commission has opened bidding for up to seven AI gigafactories. The large computing facilities would train advanced artificial intelligence models and are intended to reduce Europe’s dependence on foreign technology. They are expected to become operational from mid-2028, with total public and private investment projected at around €30 billion.
UEFA and all 55 of its national associations have unanimously rejected FIFA’s plan to sell stakes in a company controlling the World Cup and other competitions to private investors. They said European national teams would boycott FIFA competitions unless the proposal is abandoned and binding guarantees are given against private ownership.
