About this Episode
Enoma Tatah has come a long way from Cameroon and back to the West a number of times to understand better the challenges that Africans at large face in terms of support and poverty alleviation. Over time she has coined a term that encapsulates the general response to the plight of Africa in the west: POVERTY PORN.
Poverty porn, Enoma told us today on the Nubian Lounge, reinforces stereotypes and sustains many charity initiatives with minimal impact. She states that Africa is more than poverty as it is typically depicted in Europe and the rest of the world.
In view of this, she believes that engaging and empowering Africans in the diaspora and the immigrant community in general can have a lot more sustainable impact on the continent. Globally, remittances sent by migrants to low and middle income countries amount to hundreds of billions of dollars annually; and this is a vital source of income for a lot of African households. Empowering one African living abroad changes not only one life, but extends to an entire family and sometimes a whole community.
Enoma is the Founder and President of SABI Africa Centre asbl Luxembourg. Her goal is to change the narrative and create more solidarity inclined avenues for support to the African continent one action at a time.
