Sweden is using late-night football to help prevent youth crime and gang recruitment, The European Correspondent reports. The programme, running since 2006, now operates in more than 100 locations.

Young people are offered a free and supervised place to spend Friday and Saturday evenings. Local organisers build relationships with participants, many of whom are considered at risk.

The programme has been linked to significant falls in crime during its operating hours. In parts of Östergötland, reported offences fell by 49%, while organisers have also reported less vandalism, fewer break-ins and fewer conflicts.

Sweden offering late-night sports to reduce youth crime — that’s what’s right with the world.
