Spain has tightened security around Ceuta after more than 50,000 migrants crossed from Morocco last week. At least 72 people died, many while swimming to the Spanish enclave. Most arrivals have since returned, citing hunger, exhaustion and hostility, while around 2,500 Moroccans reportedly remain. Spain has deployed soldiers and police and is installing floating barriers. Italy and France have also strengthened border checks, and EU interior ministers will discuss the crisis tomorrow.
In Greece, two firefighting helicopters collided while tackling wildfires west of Athens. Two crew members were killed and two others rescued. The accident comes as Greece battles fires across several regions following extreme heat, strong winds and prolonged dry conditions. Thousands of people have been evacuated, including residents and tourists on Crete.
In Moscow, three people were killed and 21 injured in an explosion at a restaurant hosting a private event. Russian authorities said a homemade explosive device detonated after a security officer stopped the woman carrying it. Investigators have not yet established a motive or identified those responsible.
