About this Episode

Following the oil spill incident in the Moselle River, the port of Mertert has reopened after successful cleanup operations. The Administration of Water Management (AGE) confirmed that measures to eliminate the harmful substance and prevent its spread have been completed. Investigations into the source of the pollution are ongoing in collaboration with the police, and it has been determined that the port’s infrastructure, including the oil separator, is not the source of the leak. An estimated 20 to 50 liters of the oily substance had spilled from the port. Efforts using containment barriers and skimmers prevented further contamination. The environmental impact remains unknown, and analysis of water samples is ongoing.

Luxembourg’s industrial sector plans to hire over 3,000 workers in the next two years, according to a recent Fedil survey. This marks a significant rise in recruitment intentions, with a forecast of approx 3,000 hires based on responses from 92 companies employing over 42,000 workers. Of these positions, 1,715 will be newly created jobs while 1,312 will replace departing employees. The new projections indicate a more than 50% increase in expected hires compared to the previous survey, reflecting a demand for industrial and process-related roles, along with IT, construction, administrative, and logistics positions. Additionally, employers are now seeking more bachelor’s degree holders, indicating a shift in the qualifications desired.

Since the extension of the tram line to Luxembourg Airport, approximately 70,000 passengers are using the tram each month to access the airport. The new section, which opened on March 2, 2025, has led to a steady increase in ridership, particularly during school holidays. Alongside the tram, travelers can utilize bus services as part of Luxembourg’s free public transport network. However, this shift has raised concerns within the taxi industry, with operators noting a 30% to 40% drop in airport transfer demand. Taxi Federation president Paul José Leitao acknowledged that while the tram has impacted revenues, it still serves as a valuable transportation option.
