Parliament approves bill managing asylum seekers and refugees

The parliament has approved a bill that aligns with a broader European Union directive on managing asylum seekers and refugees, passing the legislation just days before the EU’s implementation deadline. The bill aims to establish a screening center in the Gare district, allowing for rapid identification and processing of asylum seekers, including security and health checks. However, lawmakers criticized the expedited process, with some expressing concerns that the government rushed the bill through without adequate analysis or consultation. Opposition members and the Green party argued that the focus of the law leans more towards control rather than protection, warning that certain provisions, such as the detention of minors, could mirror controversial practices seen in other countries. 

Minister of Health Martine Deprez has unveiled plans for a new law aimed at enhancing outpatient care within the healthcare system. The proposed legislation, known as draft law 8760, is part of the ongoing shift towards increased ambulatory services and would allow doctors to establish new outpatient clinics affiliated with hospitals. These clinics are expected to provide minor surgical procedures, dialysis, and oncology care, although they will not offer medical imaging services. All new facilities must adhere to strict quality standards and contribute to the national on-call system to ensure collaboration and avoid competition with hospitals. The reform aims to improve accessibility and efficiency in healthcare without privatizing the system, while also establishing competence networks for conditions like Long Covid and neurodevelopmental disorders.

A historic transatlantic flight using a hydrogen balloon landed in Bastendorf, on Sunday morning after completing a 5,252-kilometer journey from Maine, USA. The expedition took 70 hours and 11 minutes. This flight is notable for being the first manned transoceanic ascent using hydrogen as the sole lift gas and is set to be officially recognized for several milestones, including being the longest transoceanic gas balloon flight and the first transatlantic crossing by a British woman in a gas balloon. The flight was monitored by balloonists and covered live online, with the pilots greeted by local ballooning enthusiasts upon landing.
