Norway to phase out fast-growing “frankenchickens”

Animal welfare organisations in Norway describe a turning point as the country’s chicken industry moves to phase out so-called “frankenchickens” by next year. The term refers to fast-growing meat breeds, including Ross 308, which are selectively bred to reach slaughter weight in a short time.

Campaigners say these birds often gain weight so rapidly that they struggle to walk. Around 70 million chickens are raised annually in Norway, and about sixty percent are fast-growing breeds.

Anima International says the decision follows five years of pressure. Retailers such as Waitrose and Marks & Spencer have begun switching breeds, while campaigners urge wider adoption in the United Kingdom.
