About this Episode

One of the most encouraging medical stories of the year comes from an international cancer trial that is giving new hope to patients who had run out of treatment options.

Researchers have been testing a cancer injection called amivantamab on patients with advanced head and neck cancers that had either returned or stopped responding to both chemotherapy and immunotherapy. These are among the most difficult cases doctors face, where treatment options are often extremely limited. Yet the results have exceeded expectations. In a trial involving 102 patients across 11 countries, tumours shrank or disappeared completely in 43 patients. Most remarkably, 15 patients saw their tumours eradicated altogether.

Experts have described the results as unprecedented for this group of patients. The treatment works by attacking cancer through three different mechanisms at once: blocking growth signals that help tumours expand, shutting down pathways cancer cells use to evade treatment, and helping the immune system recognise and attack the disease.

Another advantage is simplicity. Unlike many cancer treatments that require lengthy intravenous infusions, this therapy is delivered as a quick injection under the skin every few weeks. Researchers believe it could eventually benefit thousands of patients each year and are already testing it against several other forms of cancer, including lung, colorectal, brain and stomach cancers.

For people facing some of the toughest cancer diagnoses, this is more than a scientific achievement. It is a reminder that medical research continues to push boundaries, transforming what once seemed impossible into a genuine source of hope.
