The US-based Wallace Global Fund has launched the Her Horizon Fund with $14 million, while an anonymous donor contributed another $1.5 million. The fund aims to raise $100 million overall and will focus on financing local organisations working to end female genital mutilation.
The initiative comes as funding for anti-FGM programmes has fallen sharply. A major UN programme saw its budget decline by 45 percent last year after several donor governments, including the US and Sweden, reduced development and humanitarian aid.
More than 230 million women and girls worldwide have undergone FGM. The United Nations aims to eliminate the practice by 2030, but progress is currently off track.
