Major music industry groups have proposed a labelling system that would show listeners how artificial intelligence was used to create a track.
Under the proposal, music made mainly by AI would carry an “AI-generated” label. This would include tracks featuring synthetic lead vocals, AI-generated key instruments or music created largely from prompts.
An “AI-assisted” label would apply when AI tools were used during production but human performers provided the lead vocals and primary instruments.
Record labels, artists or distributors would add the classification to a track’s digital metadata. Streaming platforms could then display the appropriate icon beside the song.
The initiative is led by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry and the Recording Industry Association of America. It is also supported by the Grammys and several independent music organisations.
The system remains voluntary, and it is not yet clear how incorrect declarations would be identified or enforced. It currently applies only to sound recordings, not to lyrics, compositions, artwork or music videos.
