Luxembourg will be under a red weather alert starting today due to exceptionally high temperatures, with forecasts indicating a potential heatwave lasting through the week. The Severe Weather and Flood Assessment Unit (CERI) has issued the alert to protect the population, as temperatures could reach up to 40°C, impacting daily life and emergency services. In preparation, a Joint Operational Command Post has been activated, comprising various agencies including the fire service and health directorate, especially ahead of the National Day festivities, which could increase the strain on emergency resources. Additionally, measures are being implemented to support vulnerable people, particularly the elderly.
Due to the heatwave, several primary schools will cancel afternoon classes. Municipalities such as Grevenmacher, Dudelange, and Junglinster took this decision. While morning classes will proceed as usual, parents are advised to pick up their children by noon if they do not attend daycare, which will remain open. The Education Ministry has provided guidelines for schools to manage the heat effectively.
