Mexico has approved a gradual cut of the working week from 48 to 40 hours by 2030. President Claudia Sheinbaum proposed the reform in December. The first two-hour reduction is planned for January 2027, pending approval by state legislatures. Salaries are set to remain unchanged. The government described the move as a labour rights reform.

Other countries are taking similar steps. Iceland tested shorter hours. Spain and Chile plan reductions. Belgium introduced a four-day week option.
