Italy has approved a law designed to help children and close relatives of mafia bosses leave organised crime. People under 25 may receive a new home, schooling, professional and psychological support, and in some cases a new identity.
Juvenile prosecutors and courts can intervene following reports from schools, social services, police or family members. Parental consent is not always required when a child faces serious harm. Around 400 children are expected to enter the programme each year.
