About this Episode

Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has declared that the country will keep the Strait of Hormuz closed, warning the world to prepare for oil prices to reach $200 a barrel amid ongoing conflicts with the U.S. and Israel. Following attacks on merchant ships, Khamenei emphasized Iran’s commitment to retaliate and close U.S. military bases in the region. This escalation comes as U.S. oil prices rise sharply, influenced by the ongoing war, which the International Energy Agency describes as causing the largest disruption to global oil supplies in history. Despite a coordinated release of strategic oil reserves by developed nations, experts assert that unless oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, sustained high prices are likely.

The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has achieved a significant victory in Nepal’s election, marking a historic moment as it won 182 seats in the parliament’s lower house, just short of a two-thirds majority. Balendra Shah, a rapper-turned-politician and the party’s candidate, is poised to become the country’s next leader. This election, the first since last year’s youth-led protests that led to the ousting of the former government, saw a voter turnout of around 60%. The results reflect a strong desire for change, with parties appealing to the youth demographic on issues like unemployment and economic inequality. The RSP’s rise is particularly notable given its founding in 2022 and its previous election performance.

China has approved a new law promoting “ethnic unity,” which critics argue will further erode the rights of minority groups by mandating the teaching of Mandarin to children from an early age. The law requires that all children be educated in Mandarin before kindergarten and throughout high school, limiting the use of native languages such as Tibetan, Uyghur, and Mongolian. Beijing claims that this will enhance job prospects and integrate minority groups into the dominant Han Chinese culture, which comprises over 90% of the population. However, scholars warn that this marks a shift toward suppression of ethnic diversity, with implications for cultural identity and autonomy. The law includes provisions to prosecute parents for promoting “detrimental” views that threaten ethnic harmony, raising concerns about increased control over minority communities.
