About this Episode
Inflation rises as energy prices jump
Luxembourg’s annual inflation rate climbed to 2.4 percent in March, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC). Higher fuel and heating oil prices after disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz pushed costs up. Service prices also increased, especially for holidays, childcare and banking. Non-energy goods saw only limited changes. The next wage indexation is still expected in the second quarter.
Luxembourg NGOs criticise developments in Middle East conflicts
Two Luxembourg civil society groups have reacted to developments linked to Israel and the war involving Iran. The advocacy organisation Comité pour une Paix Juste au Proche-Orient called on the government to condemn a new Israeli law introducing the death penalty for Palestinians. The group says the law restricts defence rights and breaches international law. The platform Friddens- a Solidaritéitsplattform meanwhile urged an immediate ceasefire in the Iran conflict, arguing that Israeli and United States military actions violate the United Nations Charter.
Aid introduced to remove Asian hornet nests
Luxembourg’s Environment Ministry has launched financial support of up to €300 for removing Asian hornet nests. The measure aims to help private landowners deal with the invasive species, which authorities say threatens biodiversity and pollinators. The intervention must be carried out by a certified professional. The Nature and Forest Agency remains responsible for removals in public spaces.
