For much of the 20th century, humpback whales were hunted to the brink of extinction. Today, thanks to decades of conservation, one of nature’s most spectacular recovery stories is unfolding just off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
Sightings of humpback whales in Rio have surged in recent years as the South Atlantic population continues its remarkable recovery. Scientists estimate that the population has grown from around 2,000 whales in the early 1980s to approximately 35,000 today—bringing it close to its pre-whaling numbers. It’s a dramatic turnaround made possible by international protections introduced after commercial whaling was halted in the mid-1980s.
Every year between June and November, thousands of humpback whales migrate around 4,000 kilometres from their feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean to the warm waters off Brazil to breed and give birth. Traditionally, most gathered further north around the Abrolhos Bank, but increasing numbers are now being spotted in Rio’s iconic Guanabara Bay, delighting residents and visitors alike.
The resurgence is also creating new opportunities for sustainable tourism. Local operators have begun offering whale-watching excursions led by marine biologists, giving people the chance to witness these giants while learning about marine conservation. Rather than exploiting wildlife, the aim is to inspire people to protect it.
Scientists are equally excited. Researchers are now studying why more whales are exploring the Rio coastline and whether the area could become an important resting, breeding or calving ground in the future. Every new sighting helps improve our understanding of these extraordinary animals.
It’s a powerful reminder that conservation can work. When humanity gives nature a chance to recover, nature often exceeds our expectations. Once nearly hunted out of existence, humpback whales are once again filling Brazil’s coastline with the sound of their blows and the sight of their breathtaking breaches.
