A new analysis by the Environment Agency shows that households in Luxembourg still produce large amounts of avoidable waste. On average, each resident generated about 154 kilograms of household waste in 2024 and 2025.
The study found that nearly 35 percent of biological waste consisted of avoidable food waste. Large amounts of organic waste also continue to end up in mixed rubbish instead of compost.
Researchers examined mixed municipal waste from fifteen municipalities to better understand sorting behaviour. Authorities say the results show that more food could be saved and that better separation of organic waste remains necessary. Weight-based pricing for rubbish collection is also seen as a tool to encourage recycling.
