About this Episode

The hospitality sector has been identified as the leading area for minimum wage violations, according to the Inspectorate of Labour and Mines (ITM). Last year, ITM conducted about 1,400 inspections, uncovering 26 violations, half of which were in the hospitality industry. This marks a significant decrease from 2021, which saw 85 violations across fewer inspections. Labour Minister Marc Spautz emphasized that the ITM monitors compliance by reviewing payslips and other documents, aiming to resolve issues promptly. While penalties for violations can range from €251 to €25,000, such fines are infrequently imposed.

In January, approximately 900 job seekers experienced delays in receiving their benefits due to a technical issue at the National Employment Agency (ADEM) following the implementation of a new application processing system. Labour Minister Marc Spautz confirmed the problem arose shortly after the rollout, although the situation has since stabilized. Currently, 246 applications submitted over a month ago remain unprocessed, with the agency still awaiting documents for over 100 cases. To alleviate the backlog, ADEM has increased payment frequency and continues to adjust the new system. These updates were provided in response to concerns raised by Green MP Djuna Bernard.

Shoppers experienced widespread issues with card payments yesterday, rendering transactions impossible in numerous stores. The problems began around 4 PM and lasted for approximately half an hour, with services reportedly restored by 4:30 PM. The cause of the disruption remains unclear, as Worldline, the payment processing company, did not provide any immediate statements regarding the incident.
