About this Episode

Air pollution has long been one of Europe’s biggest environmental and public health challenges. But after decades of stricter regulations, cleaner technologies and coordinated action, the continent is seeing measurable progress.

A new report from the European Environment Agency shows that emissions of major air pollutants continue to decline across Europe. Since 2015, emissions of harmful pollutants such as sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides have fallen by around 3% to 5% each year, thanks largely to cleaner vehicles, tighter industrial standards and a gradual transition towards cleaner energy.

The improvements are having real benefits. Cleaner air means fewer cases of asthma and respiratory disease, lower risks of heart attacks and strokes, healthier ecosystems and better quality of life for millions of Europeans. While air pollution remains one of the continent’s leading environmental health risks, the overall trend is moving in the right direction.

The report also highlights that the work isn’t finished. Around one in five air quality monitoring stations still record pollution levels above current European Union standards, particularly for fine particles and ground-level ozone. Recent heatwaves have also shown how climate change can temporarily worsen air pollution, underlining the need to continue reducing emissions.

Still, this is a rare environmental success story backed by years of data. It shows that well-designed public policies can deliver tangible results. Cleaner transport, stronger environmental rules and technological innovation are all helping people breathe easier.

In a world where environmental news often focuses on the problems still ahead, Europe’s improving air quality is a reminder that progress is possible—and that when countries commit to long-term action, millions of lives can benefit.
