The European Commission says it will not take a position for or against wider air conditioning use after June’s deadly heatwave. It says household appliance decisions are mainly for member states, while its focus remains on renovation, energy efficiency and climate neutrality.

In northern Germany, six people died after a shooting at a youth welfare centre. Police arrested two people and said one is believed to be the shooter. The motive remains unclear.

The United Nations says Pakistani air strikes and ground operations in Afghan border provinces killed at least 28 civilians. Afghanistan’s Taliban government gave a higher toll, while Pakistan says it targeted militant hideouts.

The US Supreme Court declined to hear Donald Trump’s appeal in the E. Jean Carroll case, leaving in place a civil verdict finding that he sexually assaulted and defamed her.
