England will restore the £2 cap on eligible single bus fares from 1 January until 31 December 2027. The policy follows a regional scheme introduced in Greater Manchester in 2022 and an England-wide cap that operated from 2023 to 2024. The maximum fare increased to £3 in January 2025.
The measure is expected to cost more than £500 million. Part of the funding will come from money reassigned from international climate projects, with Scotland and Wales receiving equivalent funding.
Although cheaper fares may encourage people to use buses instead of cars and reduce emissions, the government presents the policy mainly as a cost-of-living measure.
