Researchers at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague are working with Motol University Hospital to develop 3D-printed titanium joint implants. Their porous structure imitates natural bone, supports bone growth and can store antibiotics or antibacterial materials that are gradually released after surgery.
The implants could help people who need replacements for severely damaged knee, hip, shoulder or ankle joints. Their drug-release system may be particularly useful for patients at risk of post-operative infections. However, the technology is still being tested and is not yet a standard treatment.
Doctors can already deliver antibiotics through intravenous treatment, antibiotic-loaded cement, beads, spacers and local infusions. The proposed implant would combine three functions in one permanent device: replacing the damaged joint, helping the surrounding bone attach to it and delivering medication directly to the surgical area.
Similar drug-delivery systems can be produced without 3D printing. The main advantage of 3D printing is precision. It allows researchers to control the implant’s internal pores and adapt its shape and structure to an individual patient.
