Belgium is battling what authorities describe as its largest recorded wildfire, with around 3,000 hectares burned in the High Fens. Luxembourg has sent eleven firefighters and three fire engines to help, while around 600 people were evacuated.
LU-Alert has faced criticism after smoke from fires in Belgium and Germany reached Luxembourg. Authorities initially did not send a phone warning because the smoke was considered harmless, but later issued one after public concern grew.
Suicidal thoughts among workers in Luxembourg have tripled over the past decade, reaching 6.6 percent last year. The highest rate was among workers aged 16 to 24.
Preparations for the Schueberfouer are in their final week despite temperatures above 30 degrees. The fair opens Friday and runs until 9 September.
