As countries search for smarter ways to accelerate the clean energy transition, Australia has come up with an idea that’s both simple and practical: give people free electricity when there’s an abundance of solar power.
EnergyAustralia has launched a new initiative called Solar Sharer, offering eligible households three hours of free electricity every day between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. That’s the time when rooftop solar panels and large solar farms are producing more electricity than the grid often needs. Rather than letting that surplus go to waste, the programme encourages people to shift energy-intensive activities to the middle of the day.
The idea is simple. Instead of running the washing machine, charging an electric vehicle, or heating water during the evening peak, customers are rewarded for doing those tasks when renewable energy is at its most plentiful. That helps households reduce their electricity bills while making better use of clean energy already being generated.
It’s also good for the electricity grid. By encouraging people to use power when supply is highest, the programme reduces pressure during peak demand in the evening, making the grid more efficient and reducing the need for fossil fuel-powered generation at busy times. It’s an example of how changing when we use electricity can be just as important as changing how we produce it.
As renewable energy continues to grow around the world, experts say demand-shifting programmes like this could become increasingly common. They benefit consumers, support the grid, and help maximise the value of clean energy that would otherwise be underused.
Sometimes the smartest climate solutions aren’t about asking people to use less. They’re about helping people use energy at the right time.
