About this Episode

An Amazon employee filed a complaint with the Labour and Mines Inspectorate (ITM), alleging workers who laboured on 23 June — the national holiday that coincided with Amazon’s Prime Day — were not paid the statutory holiday premium. Amazon says those who volunteered were paid and that it has received no ITM communication; it also describes the number involved as “limited.” The anonymous complainant says at least 50 people were affected and supplied SMS messages and payslips showing no extra holiday pay. The ITM confirmed receipt and can request records, carry out unannounced inspections and impose fines or other measures if breaches are found.

United Airlines will launch a daily nonstop service between Luxembourg Findel and New Jersey starting 2 April 2027. The carrier said the route is part of a wider spring expansion adding several European destinations; fares shown on United’s site range roughly 850 euros. It’s the first nonstop US–Luxembourg link in about 25 years. US Ambassador Stacey Feinberg had promoted the idea after taking up her post whilst Transport Minister Yuriko Backes discussed potential direct flights with the embassy. About 40,000 US visitors came to Luxembourg in 2024.

The government has no plans for a national tourist tax, Ministers Lex Delles and Léon Gloden told parliament. Eleven municipalities currently levy local tourist taxes; Luxembourg City raised €3.6m last year, followed by Esch‑sur‑Alzette (€160,000) and Roeser (€109,000). Four municipalities reported zero revenue; Mamer collected just €40 three years ago. Municipalities set their own rates and decide how to use proceeds (Luxembourg City charges 3% of rental excluding VAT for non‑residents). The government said it holds no data on how local tourist taxes affect hospitality competitiveness or the wider tourism sector.
