Ce que j’en vois, le 30 avril 1978, à la fin du concert à l’Ancienne Belgique, un Jonathan Richman timide mais téméraire comme un lapin apeuré pris dans les phares d’un coupé sport, assis sur le bord de scène à attendre qu’on vienne lui parler, confirme le point de vue, à peine enflammé (« Sa seule existence constitue un bienfait inestimable pour l’humanité et c’est le phénomène le plus essentiel depuis l’invention du téléphone. » ), de Bert Bertrand dans En Attendant, en octobre 1977 : « Grand défenseur de l’idée que tout ce qui est petit est gentil (quelle chouette théorie !) » – Bert lui-même n’est pas très grand –, « Jonathan considère qu’un des critères de qualité de sa musique est qu’elle plaise aux petits enfants. Ainsi, il trouve qu’il ne doit pas jouer trop fort, pour ne pas leur faire peur et abîmer leurs petites oreilles. Ça a l’air débile ? Non, il se sent concerné c’est tout. »
J’ai testé : Ice Cream Man, par lequel on a débuté, plaît aux enfants, tout autant que Roller Coaster By The Sea, deux chansons de celui que François De Kock, rendant compte, dans le même magazine, du concert à l’AB, nomme un « détonateur de bons sentiments ».
