International Humanist Conference 2025 in Luxembourg
On Saturday, 5 July 2025, the Allianz vun Humanisten, Atheisten an Agnostiker Lëtzebuerg (AHA Lëtzebuerg), in cooperation with Humanists International, hosted the International Humanist Conference at the National Sports and Culture Centre d’Coque in Luxembourg City.
Under the theme “From Awareness to Action: Strengthening Open Societies through Scientific Literacy”, the event brought together national and international experts to explore how scientific education can support resilient, democratic societies.
In light of rising populism, disinformation, obscurantism, and authoritarian tendencies worldwide, fostering scientific literacy—the ability to understand, evaluate, and apply scientific knowledge—is more important than ever. A scientifically literate population is better equipped to:
- Distinguish facts from misinformation,
- Engage meaningfully in democratic processes,
- Resist ideological manipulation.
The conference focused on both the dangers of declining scientific literacy and the strategies to counter it. The morning session addressed the risks posed when decisions are based on “alternative facts” rather than evidence. The afternoon highlighted effective practices for promoting science education and critical thinking, showcasing innovative projects from Luxembourg and beyond.
Confirmed speakers included:
- Monica Belițoiu (Romania): Introducing “The Scientific Calendar” for everyday science learning
- Dennis Fink (Luxembourg): On spectacular science shows and public engagement
- Sudesh Ghoderao (India): Promoting rational thinking through teacher training
- Leo Igwe (Nigeria): On the role of science education in combatting witchcraft accusations
- Boris van der Ham (Netherlands): On science, free speech, and democratic values
- Ann Kiefer, Louis Krieger, Christian Meyers, Hanna Siemaszko, Michèle Weber, and others, bringing local and international perspectives on innovative science communication and education
Bob Reuter, President of AHA Lëtzebuerg, emphasized:
“We’re honored to host this inspiring conference in Luxembourg. It’s deeply motivating to unite such a diverse group of voices committed to science and critical thinking. Their insights will strengthen our shared mission to build more informed and open societies.”
