On Saturday, July 5, 2025, the Allianz vun Humanisten, Atheisten an Agnostiker Lëtzebuerg (AHA Lëtzebuerg), in collaboration with Humanists International, invites you to the International Humanist Conference at the National Sports and Culture Centre d’Coque in Luxembourg City.
Under the theme “From Awareness to Action: Strengthening Open Societies through Scientific Literacy,” international and national experts will discuss the role of scientific education for the future of open societies.
At a time when populist movements, obscurantism, disinformation, and authoritarian tendencies are on the rise globally, promoting scientific literacy has become a democratic necessity.
Scientific literacy—the ability to understand, critically evaluate, and apply scientific information in societal decision-making—is a key element in empowering citizens to participate actively and responsibly in an open society.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Monica Belițoiu (Romania), NGO communication expert, will present The Scientific Calendar project, which promotes science education in everyday life.
- Dennis Fink (Luxembourg), science communicator at the Luxembourg Science Center, will speak about interactive science experiences and spectacular science shows as a means to foster scientific literacy.
- Sudesh Ghoderao (India), chemistry professor and rationalist activist, will explain teacher education programs in India that promote scientific thinking.
- Leo Igwe (Nigeria), human rights activist, will analyze the role of scientific education in combating witch persecution in Africa.
- Boris van der Ham (Netherlands), former politician and humanist author, will discuss the importance of science and freedom of expression as the foundation of democratic societies.
- Ann Kiefer (Luxembourg), mathematician and winner of multiple Science Slams, will present innovative methods of science communication to make research accessible to a broad audience.
- Louis Krieger (Luxembourg), science communicator at the Scienteens Lab, will present practical workshops in which young people can conduct their own scientific experiments.
- Clemens Lintschinger (Austria), lawyer and author, will speak about the necessity of strong science in democracies.
- Christian Meyers (Luxembourg), lecturer in educational sciences, will address the resurgence of obscurantism and its impact on science and democracy.
- Hanna Siemaszko (Luxembourg), podcast producer and science communicator, will explain how podcasts can be effective tools for science communication and for fostering open societies.
- Michèle Weber (Luxembourg), science communicator at the Luxembourg National Research Fund, will show how emotional approaches can strengthen scientific education and civic engagement.
The event is open to the general public, members, journalists, and political decision-makers.
