FAQ

Why does Radio ARA still need donations?

Since 2020, Radio ARA has had a convention with the media department of the Ministry of State. This funding was made possible thanks to your support and political pressure. While the convention allows us to keep the radio going, maintain the infrastructure and pay wages for key employees, it doesn’t allow us to cover all the financial needs or develop the station further. We are and want to stay a place where new ideas come up and grow and where people can try themselves out. This dynamic is part of the radio’s soul.

As a non-profit community station, Radio ARA doesn’t benefit from the general press aid which is designed to support only traditional media whose business models rely largely on commercial advertising. To keep Radio ARA independent, commercial partnerships only constitute a minor part of our revenues and we want to keep it that way. The more diverse our funding is, the less dependent we are on any single institution or sponsor. Our income relies on several sources: the ministry convention, donations and membership fees, support from foundations for temporary projects allowing us to develop certain areas of the radio.

Recurrent donations give us the flexibility to maintain and improve our studios, broadcasting equipment and digital services, pay fair wages to staff, organize events and train volunteers and continue producing diverse, multilingual programmes.

By donating, listeners help ensure that Radio ARA remains a non-commercial space where communities can speak for themselves, and voices overlooked by mainstream media can be heard.

Recurring donations give Radio ARA predictable income. A radio station has ongoing costs every month: staff, studios, broadcasting technology, licences, website infrastructure, maintenance and programme production.

One-off donations are valuable, but they are difficult to plan around. Even a small monthly donation makes a difference. It helps protect Radio ARA’s independence and keeps community radio accessible, diverse and non-commercial.

Supporting Radio ARA is completely voluntary. It is a way of saying: “I believe in what you do, and I want to help keep it going.”

Radio ARA is a community-based project, and the value of membership lies above all in belonging to that community. Your donation supports the programmes, voices, languages, music and perspectives that are already part of the station and helps us keep them freely accessible to everyone.

You do not need to donate to be part of Radio ARA. You can get involved in many different ways: by contacting a show, calling or emailing us, meeting us at events, sharing your ideas or even creating your own programme. Radio ARA is shaped by the people who listen to it and participate in it.

Those who believe in the value of an independent, diverse and open community radio can choose to support it financially. Even a small regular donation helps us continue creating a space where people can make themselves heard and actively shape the radio.

Radio ARA has always thrived on volunteer contributions. Until the 2000s, Radio ARA was a purely volunteer-led radio, guided by people who put in their work, their knowledge, time and money. We want to maintain this strong volunteer energy and be a space that truly belongs to the people. It is yours as well.
